7 Obstacles to Mindfulness and How to Overcome Them

'washing out to dry'

7 Obstacles to Mindfulness and How to Overcome Them
Henri Junttila

“Peace of mind is not the absence of conflict from life, but the ability to cope with it.” ~Unknown
Mindfulness has allowed me to become more aware of my thoughts
and reach a sense of inner peace.
As my awareness has increased, so has the peace and joy in my life. The more familiar
I have become with the inner workings of my mind, the better I have started to feel.
I came onto the path of mindfulness, meditation, and spirituality when I was 16 years old.
I saw the TV-series Ed where the main character started experimenting with lucid dreaming.
That got me interested, and that is where my journey started. It hasn’t been an easy journey
by any means, but I’m nearing a decade on this path, and I don’t regret it for a moment.
I’ve been through a lot of challenges, such as going through brief spurts of depression.
I’ve felt like I wasn’t good enough, and that life wouldn’t work out the way I wanted it to.
In every one of these cases I let my thoughts run wild. I started focusing on the negative
instead of on the positive, and I think many people have the same tendency.
So there have been both ups and downs, but in the end they have all been there for a reason.
And with each “bad period,” I’ve learned more and more about myself.
I’ve learned more about what works and what doesn’t, and they have all been blessings in disguise.
I have wanted to give up many times, but I’m glad that I kept going.
Truly living in the present moment isn’t easy, but it is highly rewarding.
The best way to move forward on your own path to “here and now”
is to understand the potential obstacles and plan in advance how you’ll deal with them.

1. Mindfulness takes ongoing effort.
Mindfulness takes a lot of work, but the good news is that the longer you practice,
the easier it gets, and the more joyful your life becomes.
At first, your thoughts will be in chaos, and everything will seem out of control.
Your situation will feel helpless, but the more you focus on being fully where you are,
the easier it will be to find peace of mind in the moment.
Mindfulness is best practiced throughout your day. It’s not just for when you sit down and meditate. Focus on being mindful of your thoughts when you’re doing everyday tasks
and it will be easier to remain mindful when things get tough.

2. There will always be distractions.
When you’re on your journey to becoming more mindful,
it seems as if the universe starts throwing stuff at you just to give you challenges.
The distractions could be problems in your life, drama in your relationships,
or old negative beliefs popping up from your past.
These are great opportunities to practice present moment awareness.
They will help you become stronger, better, and more in tune with yourself.
The problems and challenges we face are teachers in disguise.
They are there to help you grow and to realize who you truly are.

3. Progress doesn’t always come quickly.
Progress may seem excruciatingly slow. There will be times when you attach to things
and situations that you want, which will make it difficult to be fully in the present moment.
It’s impossible to be mindful when you’re dwelling on the past or obsessing about the future.
We all do those things sometimes. I’ve experienced it countless times in my own life.
The more I want something, the more I fixate on not having it and wanting to get it.
Once I release the attachment and focus on being grateful for what I have in the moment,
my life seems to shift, and progress seems to happen naturally.

4. You may want to give up.
Like with any worthwhile journey,
you will feel like giving up and throwing in the towel multiple times.
But it is during the times when you feel most frustrated
that you are often on the verge of a breakthrough.
Our lives are very similar to the seasons. We go through cold, dark winters,
and joyful, expanding summers. It all comes and goes. It’s the ebb and flow of life.
When you realize that the challenging times are there to help you grow,
you will automatically feel more peaceful and relaxed.

5. Your goals may challenge your mindfulness.
Having goals is fantastic, essential even, but when you become overly attached to them,
something bad happens, just like we talked about above.
You know that you’re too attached to something when you start feeling frustrated,
angry, and negative.
Attachment muddles our clarity. You’re likely pursuing your goals because you believe
they will make you happy. Remember that when you start letting your goals pull you
into a stressful state of mind. If you focus on the good things around you,
you’ll feel that happiness that you think you need to chase.
This will make you much happier in the long term, and, of course, right now.

6. You might forget that the journey is the destination.
Most people miss the fact that the reward is in the journey.
Have you ever noticed that when you reach a goal, it’s not as exciting as you thought it would be?
Sure, it feels great to hit a milestone, but if you do not replace that goal with another one,
you will soon find yourself feeling unfulfilled.
That’s because we are goal-seeking mechanisms.
Humans need goals so they can have a sense of purpose and fulfillment.
It is in the journey that we learn, grow, and become better.
When you’re practicing mindfulness, remember that there is nowhere to arrive at.
If you focus on what is going on right now, the rest take care of itself.

7. Sometimes you’ll want to be anywhere but in the now.
Even the most enlightened masters on earth have to deal with difficult situations
and chaotic thoughts. The difference is they have learned to accept the moment for what it is.
When you do this, you become the guardian of your inner space,
which is the only way to feel good inside and find peace of mind, right now.

A Guide On How To Let Go Of Resentment And Relax Your Mind From Anger

There is a dragon scrolled on this ancient font
situated on the dragon lay line
allow it to gobble your anger.

A Guide On How To Let Go Of Resentment And Relax Your Mind From Anger

Anger may seem harmless. However, the truth is that it can wreak havoc in your life.
It can potentially destroy you. Holding a grudge against someone is like drinking  poison
that you have prepared for someone else. Your anger affects you and all the people around you.
So, it is important to take a step back and relax your mind from anger.
Anger can negatively affect your mind and your health. It is a lethal toxin that can destroy your life.
A number of studies show that holding a grudge against someone
can increase the risk of heart attack. It can also lead to headaches, insomnia, depression,
shallow breathing, fatigue, trembling, dizziness, chest pains, tense muscles, digestive problems
and even skin problems.
Anger can affect your mental functioning. People who hold a grudge
have difficulty concentrating on the task at hand. Anger can also result to anxiety.
If you are angry, you will have a hard time making sound decisions.
Anger can also limit you from living the life that you want and deserve.
Both anger explosions and anger repression will not help you get rid of the poison
that will slowly kill your character, your spirit and even your health.

Here are some of the effective ways to relax your mind from anger.
How To Relax Your Mind From Anger

1. Do not take things personally
You have to understand that when people do unkind things to you,
it has really nothing to do with you.
Take the case of Alyssa (our imaginary friend), a gifted computer programmer
who has repressed her anger for her mother.
Her mother has been unkind to her ever since she was young.
She was cruel and always criticized her.
For a while, Alyssa thought that there is something wrong with her.
However, as soon as she realized that her mother was just a sad and unhappy single mom
who took all her disappointments and anger on her little daughter,
it became easier for Alyssa to let go of her anger and resentment.
So if you want to have a more peaceful life, then you just have to stop taking things personally. Sometimes other people’s cruel actions have nothing to do with you.
This does not justify the act, of course, but it helps you forgive more easily.

2. Practice mindfulness meditation
Mindfulness meditation is one of the powerful ways to relax your mind from anger
and help you control your anger.
It is also one of the most common long-term anger management techniques
that many professionals recommend.
Sit in a quiet place where you will not be disturbed.
Close your eyes and start to take deep breaths.
Focus on your breath. Inhale from your nose and exhale from your mouth.
Silently say “inhale” as you inhale and silently say “exhale” as you exhale.
Repeat this process for five to ten minutes.
If a distracting thought enters your mind,
then gently acknowledge it then bring your focus back to your breath.
Say a little prayer of gratitude and then open your eyes.
It is important to practice meditation as often as you can.
This is to ensure that you will reap optimal results.

3. Mental imagery
One of the most powerful ways to relax your mind from anger is through guided imagery.
Guided imagery helps you visualize an environment where you are relaxed and free of anger.
This exercise will help you relax your mind and it helps release your anger.
Here is a guided mental imagery script that you can use:
It is time to take a break and relax. It is time to deal with anger in a healthy and productive way.
Anger is a natural and normal emotion. There is nothing wrong with it.
Anger is a part of being human.
You have to take a few moments to relax. After this relaxation session,
you can proceed with the rest of your daily tasks and activities.
It feels good to relax. It is okay to be angry. In fact, it is okay to release your anger in a healthy way. When you manage your anger, it does not mean that you are holding anger in.
It just means that you are choosing to manage your behavioral responses when you are angry.
Inhale and hold it for a moment. Then, exhale. Hold that tension as you breath in and then release the tension as you exhale. Now, turn your focus to your feelings.
Take time to notice the physical sensation of anger. Where do you store your anger?
Do you store your anger in your jaws, neck, stomach or hands?
Now, we will begin to relax your muscles.
Now, tighten your hands in fists. Feel that tension in your arms and hands.
Then, relax and release. Do this with the rest of the body parts where you store your anger.
Once you are done, say these affirmations that will help you deal with anger:
I acknowledge my anger. I accept my anger.
I have the power to control my emotions and my reactions.
I can experience my anger, but I can wait before I take action.
Notice that you are now feeling more relaxed. Now, breath in and out and then count 5 to 1.
You will now feel more alert and awake and yet, you will feel more relaxed, calm and peaceful.
Guided mental imagery is one of the most effective ways to relax your mind from anger.
It is best to do this at night before you go to sleep. This exercise will also help you sleep better.

4. Yoga
Yoga is one of the most effective ways to relax your mind and body, and release all the anger
that you have been holding in for days, months or even years.
Yoga is a holistic exercise that will help balance your mind and your body.
This holistic exercise will also help calm your mind and control your emotions.
Yoga is a physical exercise and many studies prove
that physical exercise can help relax your mind when you are angry.
Here is a great yoga sequence that you can try to relax your mind from anger.

5. Walk away
When you are angry at someone, it is a must that you acknowledge  the emotion.
However, it is also best to take time to breathe and then walk away.
When you walk away, it is easier for you to reassess your anger.
Remember that you would most likely regret the things that you say when you are angry.

6. Repeat a calming phrase or word
One of the most effective ways to relax your mind from anger
is to keep repeating a calming phrase or word.
You can try to repeat these words silently when you are angry:
Relax
Breathe
Take it easy

7. Try cognitive restructuring
In order to release your anger, you have to try doing cognitive restructuring.
It is important to use logic to understand your anger. Even when your anger is justified,
it is easy to be irrational. To relax your mind from anger,
you have to remind yourself that the world is not against you.
You have to avoid feeling like a victim. This will keep you in perspective.

8. Laugh
Humor can help defuse your anger quickly. If you are angry, it is best to take a step back,
breath and think of something funny. You can also watch funny videos on YouTube.
It will instantly make you feel good. This does not mean that you are repressing your anger.
This is just one way of dealing with it in a healthy way.

9. Listen to music
Listening to music is one of the most effective ways to deal with your anger.
Good music has the ability to calm the mind and the spirit.
Listening to slow music can help neutralize your emotions when you are extremely angry.

10. Redecorate or try gardening
Home chores like redecorating or gardening can be extremely therapeutic.
It helps you deal with your anger and relax.

11. Forgive
Forgiveness is the most effective way to relax your mind from anger and achieve peace of mind. Everyone makes mistakes and it may not hurt to forgive the ones who have hurt you unintentionally.
It is also important to forgive those who have intentionally hurt you.
When you forgive them, it does not mean that you are condoning their actions.
It just means that you are no longer binding yourself to the pain that they have brought you.
It means that you will no longer become a prisoner of your anger
and you are already ready to move on.

12. Ask for help
If you have deep seated anger, it is important to ask for professional health.
A counselor or a psychologist can help you sort out deep-seated issues.
It is also one of the most effective ways to deal with the negative emotion constructively.
Of course, this  is the last resort.
You can go to a psychologist only if the other techniques did not work for you.
Anger is one of the most powerful emotions that you can feel.
You have to realize that your anger has the power to destroy you,
so it is important to control your anger before it controls you.

Mindfulness in the morning is more than meditation. Energetic NLP: How to Retrieve Your Energy from Other People

Mindfulness in the morning is more than meditation.
By Louis Alloro

   Alarm clock goes off
The alarm goes off in the morning. You may think:
(a) I didn’t get enough sleep last night.
(b) I am super excited to start the day.
Most people, whether they are conscious of it or not, think (a)
“I didn’t get enough sleep last night” as they hit the snooze button for eight more minutes of sleep.
In fact, it’s a thought like this that causes an action of inaction which keeps you staying in bed,
missing your workout, and being late to work.
Further, this thought of “not enough” is the first in a slew of negative, scarcity thoughts
that continue all day long, usually ending with “I haven’t gotten enough done today”
as they hit the pillow to go to sleep at night.

Sound familiar?
Psychologists call it negativity bias, the notion supported by research that we are wired
to focus on potential threats, the “what if something bad will happen next” type of thought
that has an adaptive purpose in the era of survival.
(Think saber tooth tiger potentially around the next corner in the woods.)

But for those of us looking to thrive, we can learn to recondition our often default thinking
onto a more positive path, thereby influencing our energy, immunity, sleep, and even success.
(Think Olympic athlete as she prepares to go for the gold.)

Here’s where mindfulness comes in.
Mindfulness is “A mental state of calm awareness of the present moment, marked by acceptance, openness and curiosity toward your thoughts and feelings, rather than judgments of them,”
according to the consensual definition.

When you recognize scarcity thinking, you may think:
(a) There you go again, you negative Nelly.
(b) Isn’t that fascinating that I am so conditioned. Thankfully, I can rewire.
This awareness of the present moment is what mindfulness is all about.
To that end, mindfulness is a way of being in the world. It’s not yet another way to improve yourself, not another item for your to-do list, and not just meditation.

No one is exempt from doing the work to develop a mindfulness muscle. It takes practice.

Learn to knit
Dr. Ellen Langer, the first woman to be granted tenure in the Harvard Psychology Department,
has been studying mindfulness since the 1970s.
One book called Counterclockwise highlights some of her research that shows
mindfulness can help us increase vitality and even reverse the aging process.
Langer suggests we take up a creative class that can bring out attention to detail as we learn a skill (like painting or knitting) which focuses our attention in a particular way and for a sustained period
of time where we base one step on the previous step, thereby adapting what comes in the present moment to what will happen next.
She says, “When people are mindful, they are open to generating new ways
of looking at the world and are not controlled by routines and habitual ways of observing . . .
the simple process of actively drawing distinctions.”

Building mindfulness
Our lives are written so by routine.
When was the last time you took a new route to work in the morning?
I encourage clients to take mindful walks. The next time you walk to the coffee shop,
put your cellphone away and focus on feeling the full strides of your feet on the ground.
Or, do the dishes mindfully. Instead of thinking about what you “should have done earlier”
or what you “need to do next,” just be with the dish for a minute and feel the full sensations
of warm water suds on your hands. These types of slight shifts in how you normally run on default mode will strengthen your mindfulness muscle.
Louis practicing meditation
It’s true – with extensive research to back it up – that meditation is a great practice
to build mindfulness for the same reasons it focuses our attention.
If you think you don’t know how to meditate, you can learn
and if you think you don’t have ten minutes a day to meditate, then you need twenty.
It’s a simple concept: we construct our reality (our experience of the world) in large part
by where we put our limited attention. (How many of you feel a little Attention-Deficit-Disordered (ADD) these days?) More often than we recognize, we can make choices consciously
and intentionally thereby getting more of what we want in life:
more health, more wealth, specifically:
Decreased anxiety and stress
Increased heart-rate variability
Increased immune response
Activated prefrontal cortex, which allows our best, most creative thinking
Or, how about peace? Teacher Thich Nhat Hanh says, “Through mindfulness, we can learn
to live in the present moment instead of in the past and in the future. Dwelling in the present moment is the only way to truly develop peace, both in one’s self and in the world.”
The world needs peace right now. The world needs you to increase your mindfulness.
So, thank you for practicing and building your mindfulness muscle.
(But don’t say “no problem” because that ain’t mindful, according to John Amodeo.)
When the alarm goes off tomorrow morning, take a slow and low cleansing breath
and remember to express gratitude for another day to be alive.

You are in danger if you don't know how to clear other people's energy
out of your body, and how to retrieve your energy
from the people you have interacted with.
In 8 minutes learn how to have more energy, health, clarity, and joy in being alive. More vitality. Make Better decisions.
M'reen:I practice this most mornings and forget to practice this most nights. :(
But remember that doing something always outclasses being a perfectionist.
