16 Things You Don’t Need To Say Yes All the Time (Though You Think You Do)

Knap weed. Slender, spear and creeping thistle.

16 Things You Don’t Need To Say Yes All the Time (Though You Think You Do)
Oskar Nowik

There are two words I consider one of the most powerful and influential, namely “yes and “no.”
The right combination of them and using the right one according to the situation guarantees
you more happiness, health and wealth.
To be nice and avoid hurting others, we often say yes though we feel like saying no.
Whereas empathy is a good feature to have, being a people-pleaser has terrible consequences.
If you ever regretted saying yes,
these 16 examples will help you to not make the same mistake again.

1. You don’t need to say yes to people asking for your time.
Some say time is money, but in reality, there’s one thing that makes time the real wealth.
Namely, once it’s gone, it’s gone forever.
Whereas money can always be made up, time never goes back.
Now, don’t misunderstand it with being insensitive ignorant, it’s far from that!
When someone ask for your time, don’t say yes when it conflicts with your personal priorities.
If you think this person deserves your attention,
schedule one day of a month when you can devote your attention to them.

2. You don’t need to say yes to people asking for your money.
There is an adage which says don’t let your friends borrow money unless you don’t mind
never getting it back. If you can’t accept them never paying back, it’s a sign you should decline.
Borrowing money can destroy your relationships with other people and make your life really tense. Oftentimes, it’s better to deal with the temporary discontent
when you say no than experience the problems later on.

3. You don’t need to say yes to people who clearly exploit you.
When someone approaches you only during struggles, you are just a tool to solve their problems.
It’s when somebody only takes and never gives that you should consider stop saying yes.
Sure, you should contribute value to other people’s lives, but folks who batten on generosity
are not ones who deserve it.

4. You don’t need to say yes to please your friends.
Saying no to a friend is tricky. You care about them and feel obliged to act accordingly.
The truth is, a real friend will accept your refusal because they value your close friendship.
It’s false people who leave you in case of disagreement.

5. You don’t need to say yes while under social pressure.
Social pressure can be a huge obstacle to overcome. People expect you to go with the flow and please them. Saying no requires courage and confidence but oftentimes it’s a lifesaving decision.
Every time you don’t say yes under a big group pressure,
you clearly show your values which everyone respects even when they don’t admit it.

6. You don’t need to say yes so you fit in.
Similar to the previous example, people in the crowd subordinate so in order to not stick out,
you are expected to submit to their influence. But at some point everyone comes to the conclusion that fitting in is unnecessary and only causes regrets.

7. You don’t need to say yes when rules and dogmas limit you.
Different environments set clear expectations toward behavior within the group.
Whereas some rules are necessary so the society can function, there are many dogmas you have
a full right not to follow. Embrace who you are and don’t let the outdated doctrines change it.

8. You don’t need to say yes to tradition and religion.
Born among people who set religion and tradition as the highest priority,
you are expected to worship these values. If, however, deep in heart you don’t consider
them as truths, that’s a clear sign to refuse following them.
When I stated to my family that I see religion differently than they do, I faced disapproval.
As the time goes by, however, the tension expires and you feel proud of being your true self.

9. You don’t need to say yes to your parents.
Being able to do this is might be as hard as it is to differentiate between following your heart
and being unappreciative toward your parents. They love you and want you to live the best life possible, but sometimes it’s you who knows better your deepest desires.
When you parents expect you to choose a certain career path,
remember it’s you and not them who will be obliged to that lifestyle.

10. You don’t need to say yes to your boss.
Be cautious, I don’t intend to make you lose your job! But then again, if you do have alternatives
and your current boss destroys your life, maybe it’s time to say goodbye and part ways.

11. You don’t need to say yes to things that make your priorities secondary.
If you don’t respect your values, nobody will.
You are responsible for what happens in your life and it’s the moment when you fully accept
this responsibility when you can finally give your goals the top priority.

12. You don’t need to say yes to things fighting for your attention.
Today’s world attacks you with distractions on a regular basis.
A skill to ignore stuff begging for your attention is invaluable to survive. Remember,
whatever you decide to pay attention to, you might be neglecting things that actually matter.

13. You don’t need to say yes to sales and extra offers.
I know it’s often hard not to lose your mind during the sales. And marketers are people who know
it best. Various psychology tricks are applied to make you say yes and follow the sales funnel.
At first, you feel instant happiness, but then, as your wallet gets thinner and what you bought collects dust, you begin questioning whether saying no wouldn’t be a wiser decision.

14. You don’t need to say yes to email offers.
As someone who likes to subscribe to interesting newsletters,
I know how tempting certain offers are. You are presented with an almost perfect offer.
As a result, a new need is created and a product for its satisfaction sold.
But if you wouldn’t open the email, would you even desire that very product or service?

15. You don’t need to say yes to time-suckers.
Television, Internet or Social Media, these are all the wonders of technology which revolutionized the world of communication and information. But if you don’t control them, they will control you. It’s easy to get lost staring at the screen and mindlessly wasting your time.
Your brain tends to say yes to comfortable situations and time-suckers definitely count to that.
As we determined in the first point, your time is the most precious resource
so protecting it is obligatory.

16. You don’t need to say yes to notifications.
I disabled every possible digital notification, expect an app that reminds me to work out
and it does it at the right time. But it wasn’t always like that.
Facebook notifications  would immediately catch my attention and destroy my focus.
Almost any serious app makes sure to notify its users so they stay engaged and active.
Whereas it’s definitely beneficial to the founders, it’s incredibly harmful to yourself. Turn off every unnecessary notification and never again say yes to distractions begging for your attention.

Set a goal for yourself
"Life is hard at times. But when I overcome more challenges, I become much stronger then.
So I’m going to embrace them."

15 Signs You're Doing Well In Life Even Though You Don't Think So

My painting of Zeus my son's dog.

Sarita King  Student, teacher and everything else in between.

Let’s face it, sometimes life feels like it’s falling apart at the seams.
Perhaps you’ve lost your job, or your marriage just ended, or you failed to pass an exam
and now you are simply feeling helpless and defeated.
Winston Churchill once said:
“Success consists of going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm.”
Today I want to remind you why, even though you may be feeling a bit like a failure,
you are most definitely not.
Here are 15 signs that show you are doing well in life even though you don’t think so!

1. You’ve lived and learned
No one said life was easy and while the bumps on the road may hurt, the ride is definitely worth it.
Think back to your failures and defeats. You must know they were all for a reason
and part of a grander plan. Each difficulty has led you to where you are at today,
each trial has moulded you into the magnificent, resilient, person that you are.

Continue to move forward in faith, hope and love, knowing that each experience
has taught you what you need to become who you were born to  be.

ave a comfy bed to sleep in
I’ll never forget an interview done on NPR a while back. A young Haitian mother told her story.
She had little ones that constantly wondered when they would be able to eat and go to school
like all the other kids around them. What impacted me the most about this story was their sleeping arrangements: they all laid on the dirt floor, and at night if it rained everyone would have to get up, grab whatever was left of their “bed” and move to a dry spot.  This story gave me a whole new appreciation for my bed and I hope it does the same thing for you!

3. You strive to be better
The fact you are feeling a bit down because you haven’t achieved what you want to achieve
shows you are trying. In the grand scheme of things, you always strive to be better
and for as long as you continue to do that, happiness, success and love will come
– just don’t give up. Einstein once said: “It’s not that I am so smart, it’s that I stay with problems longer.” Hang in there and never stop striving to be all you can be!

4. You have/had a job
Whichever way you look at this one, it is still a win-win situation for you.
If you have a job: kudos! Keep at it and know that you are richly blessed.
If you recently lost your job, don’t fret! You’ve gotten a job before, you can get one all over again. Perhaps this is the opportunity you’ve been waiting for to do something you truly love to do.
Keep searching, keep hoping, and know that you can accomplish the seemingly impossible
if you work hard and believe you can.

5. Knowledge is at your fingertips
In this day and age, you can learn anything and everything you want.
Knowledge is truly at your fingertips! Since knowledge is power,
seize that power and let it assist you in the pursuit of your dreams.
Take advantage of all the “learning” opportunities that come your way.

6. You have food to eat
Sometimes a bit more than you should! Food is such an overlooked blessing,
yet if you miss it for a few hours you start feeling the necessity of it.
Take the time to enjoy your next meal, whatever that is, savor each bite and remind yourself
that happiness is found in enjoying the simple things of life, such as eating a piece of pie.

7. You have the power to choose
Aristotle once said: “Excellence is never an accident. It is always the result of high intention,
sincere effort, and intelligent execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives
 – choice, not chance, determines your destiny.”  Need I say more? Claim your power to choose.

8. You’ve experienced love butterflies or something like it
Ahh! To be in love…to feel your whole body literally react to that moment
when you simply steal a glance from the one you are infatuated with.
Experiencing such a natural, basic and simple, yet passionate moment will give you memories
that will last a life time. You are beyond blessed to have experienced such a sublime moment!

9. You have clean water
This one should not be overlooked. Do you ever watch Bear Grills and all his desperate moves
to get just a few ounces of muddy water? There are also people who aren’t going without water because they have a survival show, but instead because it is their harsh reality.
Around 783 million people do not have access to clean water around the globe.
Be thankful and fully aware that you are doing well in life even if you don’t think so.

10. You have a dream
Whatever your dream is, it’s yours. You have the ability to embrace it and create it.
Don’t give up on dreaming or on your dreams. They are what life’s best things are made up of.

11. Your happiness is real
You have the power to choose happiness for your life in everything you do
and in every circumstance.  Your happiness is defined by whether or not you are able to discern and seize an opportunity to feel happy. It may be something as simple as enjoying the laughter of a child.

12. You have clothes to wear
And sometimes too many options, which trumps your productivity, but that is another subject.
The bottom line is, you don’t have to go naked through the streets or poorly dressed.
You enjoy the blessing of being properly dressed for every occasion and have the ability
to shield your body from the elements. Really, life would get very cold without clothes.

13. You have the ability to forgive
Can you imagine what this world would look like without forgiveness?
Never mind the world, just your life! Imagine how bogged down, bitter and unhappy you would be
if you did not have the ability to forgive other’s mistakes as well as your own.
It would make it nearly impossible to live and most definitely a nightmare to move on with life
when difficulties arose. You have the unique gift of forgiving and moving on.

14. You believe in something greater than yourself
For all the times you were so caught up in your own little world and drowning in a kiddie pool version of life’s problems, you’ve had the ability to step back and realize that you have something greater to live for than yourself.
Whether it is God, your family or friends, you can believe that your purpose is to achieve
something that will be for the greater good or to simply bring honor to your God.

15. You have the opportunity to build global friendships
In today’s day and age, your best friend can literally be five thousand miles away
yet you can still experience the beauty of that friendship. You have the unique capacity to be acquaintances with one person in almost every country of the world,
something no other generation before the 1900’s was easily able to do.
As far as I am concerned, your global ability to make friends is definitely a sign
you are doing well in life, even if you don’t think so.

7 Signs You Are In A Happy Relationship, According To Science

Woodbridge UK

7 Signs You Are In A Happy Relationship, According To Science
Sophie Gallagher

Many relationships go through ups and downs,
but only some of them are going to stand the test of time.
And because we don’t have a crystal ball to look into our romantic future
(as much as we would like one), we’ve called on science for some good old-fashioned evidence
that our relationship is as good as we believe it is.
So here are seven signs that you are in a happy place with your partner.

1. You have had previous long-term relationships.
No one likes to dwell on past relationships when you’re busy falling in love with someone new,
but it turns out it might help our new endeavours.
According to relationship expert, Dr Jacqui Gabb, those of us who have loved and lost shouldn’t
“lock that experience away in a cupboard”. Instead we should learn from those experiences,
picking up on relationship warning signs and learning who to hold on to.

2. You met each other on Tinder.
...or any other online dating app for that matter.
A study found that couples who met online, rather than at work or in a bar,
are more satisfied with each other and less likely to break up.
The study said:
“This data suggests that the internet may be altering the dynamics and outcomes of marriage itself.”

3. You don’t post annoying photographs on Facebook.
As much as it might seem really tempting to post that #couplegoals selfie on Facebook,
a study has found that those who don’t post their relationship all over the internet are the happiest.
This is because they aren’t anxiously seeking other people validate their romance. #So remember that fact next time you’re picking out the best filter to optimise your smugness.

4. You enjoy watching Netflix together.
It’s Friday night, and you’ve settled down with a takeaway and a night in front of the television
for the third week in a row. While it might not feel like you’re living your best social life,
watching boxsets and movies is “good for relationships” and for your health,
according to researchers.
This is because it supposedly enhances the quality of your time together
(they clearly haven’t seen you arguing over GOT plot spoilers).

5. You make time to pay them compliments.
Everyone likes to hear nice stuff said about themselves, but in a relationship
things can easily get a little stale and forced on that front.
So you’ll be pleased to hear that science wants us all to pay a few more compliments
and say “thank you” more often, as it is one of the most important factors
in keeping a relationship healthy across all groups.

6. You have sex once a week.
f you’re worried everyone is getting between the sheets more than you, then you might be comforted to know that the optimum amount of sex for a happy relationship is just once a week.
While having an adult sleepover more than once a week doesn’t hurt, it also isn’t making
a difference to your happiness levels, so you might want to conserve your energy.

7. You do not have any children together.
Although this may not be the plan forever, you should enjoy your childless years,
as one of the biggest ever studies of relationships in Britain revealed that
if you want to be as happy as possible, you’re better off not having kids.
Childless men and women are more satisfied with their relationships
and more likely to feel valued by their partner.

How To Defuse An Argument With Your Partner With Just One Word

Vetch and tesal husks.

How To Defuse An Argument With Your Partner With Just One Word
Rachel Moss

Unless you’re living in a fairytale, arguments in long-term relationships are inevitable.
But a relationship expert has revealed how to nip these disagreements in the bud
before you say something you later regret.
According to Hal Runkel, you can take the heat out of a fight with a single word: “ouch”.
According to Runkel, we often use the personal information we’ve gathered about a loved one against them in the heat of the moment.
If our partner does this to us, our instinct is often to fire a hurtful home-truth back,
which can escalate the situation.
“When [you’re] in conflict, inevitably [you] will say something that hurts the other person
using the ‘inside information’ that you have on them or that they have on you,”
he told Business Insider.
But if we say something like “ouch, that hurt” instead, it changes the course of the dialogue.
“That conversation —which was a very familiar path, that fight — is now a totally different path because one of you chose to actually get vulnerable,” Runkel explained.
“It wasn’t a step of pushing [your partner] away. It was a step of inviting [your partner] in by saying: ‘You know what? I am open enough to you that you can actually hurt me.
So now how about we talk to each other as if we actually love each other?’”
Next time you feel your temper rising, give this a go.
