Optimism - How To Become Optimistic Right Now

Vetch behind Lady's bedstraw.
Lady's bedstraw is sweet smelling.

Video Summary:
Optimism is a hopeful outlook for the future.
A person's degree of optimism is a critical determinant of an their success,
according to the research of Dr. Martin Seligman.
Dr Seligman found differences in how optimists and pessimists explain identical events,
using his three categories of explanatory style: permanence, pervasiveness, and personalization. Permanence identifies whether the event is one that will be long-lasting or transitory.

Pervasiveness identifies whether the event is limited or global to the individual's life.
Personalization identifies whether the individual assumes responsibility for the event,
or attributes it to other factors.

Optimists are more likely to find their problems to be temporary, limited, and not of their making. Pessimists, on the other hand, are more likely to think their problems are permanent,
wide-ranging and preventable. Obviously it's more pleasant to be an optimist than a pessimist.

You can choose to be more optimistic. Periodically make a substantial but detailed list of up to thirty things to which you look forward. Or, make a shorter list every morning of the highlights you foresee in your day. Your level of optimism will likely improve through this simple but effective exercise.

Depression often co-occurs with joint diseases

Mint.

Depression often co-occurs with joint diseases
Universität Basel

Summary:
Depression is one of the leading health risks and affects 350 million people worldwide.
Roughly one third of the participants in a recent study who were suffering from depression
also suffered from at least one physical disease. This association was evident especially
with arthrosis and arthritis that are degenerative and inflammatory diseases of the joints.

Those suffering from depressive symptoms have an increased risk for physical diseases,
especially for arthrosis and arthritis. These findings were reported by researchers
from the University of Basel and the Ruhr-University Bochum.
Their results, based on data from 14,300 people living in Switzerland,
have been published in the scientific journal Frontiers in Public Health.

Depression is one of the leading health risks and affects 350 million people worldwide.
In Switzerland, around 400,000 people individuals suffer from it each year.
Several studies in countries around the globe have shown that depression
is associated with an elevated risk for a variety of physical diseases.
However, for Switzerland, a country ranked as one of the wealthiest
and with one of the best and most expensive health care systems worldwide,
the association between depressive symptoms and physical diseases had yet been unclear.

A research group led by Prof. Gunther Meinlschmidt
from the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Basel
and the Faculty of Medicine at the Ruhr-University Bochum has now attempted to close this gap. They conducted analyses, using data from the Swiss Health Survey,
comprising of 14,348 subjects aged 15 years and older.

Risk for arthrosis and arthritis
The psychologists report that participants with depressive symptoms have a higher risk
of suffering from a physical disease. Roughly one third of the participants suffering from depression also suffer from at least one physical disease. This association was evident especially
with arthrosis and arthritis that are degenerative and inflammatory diseases of the joints.
More studies are now needed to further scrutinize the association between depression
and joint diseases. According to the study, it can be speculated that depressive symptoms result
in a lack of interest in physical activity, which may then lead to joint diseases. However, it could also be the other way around: People with joint diseases may be impaired in their daily activities negatively affecting their mental health and ultimately resulting in depressive symptoms.
Or: Joint diseases are often caused by inflammatory processes, which have also been speculated
for certain types of depressive disorders. Therefore, inflammatory processes may represent
the link between depressive symptoms and physical diseases.

Improving health care
"A better understanding of the association between depressive symptoms and physical diseases
in Switzerland is the basis for a better health care provision for people suffering
from mental disorders as well as physical diseases," says Gunther Meinlschmidt, author of the study. In addition, these findings are also important for health care policy, for example by improving
the precision of future estimates of societal burden and costs related to depression.

Critical Thinking - Use Independent Thinking To Build A Powerful Life

 Lavender.

Video Summary:
In this age of information, we are literally awash in it,
much of it crafted to achieve a a purpose counter to that of the reader.
There's no shortage of information. In fact, we have derived an acronym for it:
TMI. Our shortage is in techniques to decide what to believe.
Critical thinking is a fundamental tool for steering one's life.
No one has achieved great success without possessing the skill of critical thinking –
- thinking independently. Artists, philosophers and inventors derive many of their ideas
by questioning the established norms.
While employers may lump critical thinking under the general category of "problem solving,"
it's much more survival-oriented. It encompasses far more than mere information gathering,
which is clearly part of the first step. It also includes knowing where to look
and continuing the search without prejudice about what we may find.
Analyzing the accumulated information requires thoughtful consideration of the voracity
of the information and what we believe to be true in our life, not necessarily in someone else's.
Learn how to become a critical thinker who is open-minded and curious.
Cultivate the skill of critical thinking, a true source of wisdom.
Ask questions to probe to the core of the issue. Then derive your own answers.
